Yatzy
Rules of Yatzy and how we play
The following set of rules is the one used by us.
Yatzy is played with a variable number of dice - we play with five. Each turn you have three throws to try to score points on the scoreboard, which consists of three identical rows, as is seen on the right (You can download the scoreboard by following a link at the bottom of each page). You always start your turn with all five dice in the first throw. Between these three throws you can freely choose to safe one or more of your dice in order to score points in the end of your turn. As is seen in the video, where after the first throw, he chooses to safe two 5's, but after throwing three 4's in the second throw, he chooses to go for 4's instead. He ends up with three 4's.
Three 4's can be used in the groundplay. The groundplay consists of 18 scorefields divided into the three columns. In each column you have to score 63 points in order to get a 50 points bonus. There is a scorefield of every number of the dice, meaning that you can only score points with 4's in the row designating 4's on the scoreboard, as is seen on the right.
In order to achieve 63 points in a column, it is just enough to get 3of-a-kind of each of the dicenumbers, and you will get a checkmark in each scorefield, meaning that you have enough for the bonus. If you fail to score 3of-a-kind, it will be symbolized with fx -4, if you only achieved two 4's instead of three. Likewise, it will be symbolized with +4 if you achieved four 4's. This indicates that you are four points down or four points up, in order to get your bonus of 50 points.
Besides the groundplay, you need to score as many points as possible in the rows below the groundplay. You may freely choose between setting your scores in the groundplay or other during the whole game. Here follows a list of the other points you can score:
1 par: 2of a kind (two 6's: 12 points)
2 par: Two times 2of a kind (two 6's, two 4's: 20 points)
3 ens: 3of-a-kind (three 5's: 15 points)
4 ens: 4of-a-kind (four 6's: 24 points)
Lille Straight: 1+2+3+4+5: 15 points
Stor Straight: 2+3+4+5+6: 20 points
Hus: 3of-a-kind + 2of-a-kind (three 6's, two 5's: 28 points)
Chance: The total amount of eyes. (Best Chance is five 6's: 30 points)
Yatzy!: 5of-a-kind: 50 points (five 1's is as good as five 6's)
After each game you count your score, and the highest score wins.
We also compete to achieve the highest score in one column, meaning that each game is doubled; we play to win both the best total score and the best score in one row, making your decisions during the game more strategic.
